This year, as the National Wood Flooring Association celebrates its 30th anniversary, its Wood Floor of the Year contest marks 25 years recognizing member companies for exceptional craftsmanship.
The first contest, then just "Floor of the Year," was held in 1990, and entries were grouped into residential and commercial floors, with one floor taking the "Floor of the Year" title in each category. Second- and third-place awards were also given.
Convention attendees voted on all awards, and the inaugural winners were French-Brown Floors in the Commercial category with an ebony and Brazilian rosewood starburst medallion and Sunshine Flooring Co. in the Residential category with a quartersawn red oak, white oak and ash rhomboid parquet. Years later both French-Brown's Elizabeth Brown and Sunshine Flooring's Allan Pyne received the NWFA's Industry Leadership award, as well.
