Data released by the Brazilian government found deforestation in the Amazon rainforest has reached its highest rate in 11 years, CNN reports.
The data—generated by the Satellite Legal Amazon Deforestation Monitoring Project—was released earlier Nov. 18 and revealed 3,769 miles of rainforest were lost during the 12 months through July 2019.
Environmental activists have linked the increase in deforestation to a lack of enforcement by President Jair Bolsonaro, who was elected in October 2018.
The Amazon rainforest received global attention over the summer when massive wildfires broke out. Many blamed illegal logging activities for rise in wildfires. The Brazilian government announced it had gained control over the fires in October.
