Manufacturer News Mohawk Industries (Dalton, Ga.) beat analysts' expectations last quarter by earning $0.67 per share; $0.47 per share was expected. The company earned $46 million during that time while sales fell 24 percent from the previous quarter to $1.41 billion. During the first six months of 2009, Mohawk posted a net loss of $60 million, or $0.87 per share, on $2.61 billion in sales; first-half 2009 sales at Mohawk are down 27 percent from 2008.
Armstrong World Industries (Lancaster, Pa.), parent company of Armstrong Hardwood Flooring, earned $0.50 cents per share during the second quarter of 2009, down from 2008's second quarter earnings per share of $0.92. Armstrong earned $28.3 million on $705.7 million in sales, down 24 percent from 2008's second quarter mark of $926.8 million. During the first half of 2009, Armstrong has earned $17.1 million, compared with earnings of $67.6 million during the first six months of 2008. Wood flooring net sales of $127.8 million in the second quarter declined 24 percent from $168.8 million in the prior year's second quarter. Operating income from wood flooring totaled $900,000 in the second quarter; the company posted $12.4 million in operating income in the second quarter of 2008.
Lumber Liquidators' (Toano, Va.) sales increased 11.8 percent during the second quarter to $143.1 million; this resulted in a $0.25 per-share increase. During the second quarter of 2008, the company had $128 million in net sales. Same-store sales for the second quarter fell 1.8 percent, while last year they increased 2.7 percent during the second quarter. The company's second quarter net income rose 18.1 percent to $6.9 million compared with its first-quarter income; it earned $34.9 million during the same period the prior year. The company opened eight new stores in the second quarter of 2009; it plans to open 14 to 18 more stores during the second half of 2009, bringing its 2009 total to 32 to 36 new stores.
Mohawk Finishing Products (Hickory, N.C.) was awarded a 2009 New Product Sequoia Award by the Association of Woodworking & Furnishing Suppliers (Commerce, Calif.) for its line of Greenguard-certified waterborne finish products. The award recognizes innovative new products, and entries were evaluated on quality, production impact, practicality, innovation and user-friendliness.
