A flooring firm hired to redo the gym floor at Purnell Swett High School in Pembroke, N.C., found mercury in the floor, according to The Robesonian, the local newspaper.
The discovery requires that the floor be completely removed and a new floor installed, for a total cost of $355,000 to the district.
The total includes $140,000 for removal of the contaminated flooring, $180,000 to install a new floor, $25,000 for construction oversight and $10,000 for bleacher removal.
The district will also pay $2,500 to test the flooring in the gym at the middle school, which was built around the same time as the high school gym.
