Fibonacci LLC, a company that plans to manufacture hemp into flooring, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its 11,230-square-foot plant in Murray, Ky.,WKMS reports.
Fibonacci Founder Greg Wilson told WKMS the company is the first in the world to create flooring from hemp with its “HempWood” product, and he plans to source hemp and soybean-based flooring adhesive from west Kentucky, where the company is investing $5.8 million.
The technology is similar to that used to manufacture strandwoven bamboo flooring, an industry Wilson worked in before founding Fibonacci. The company also uses "SmartOak" technology, which incorporates logs that would otherwise have been used to create wood chips, according to the report.
Wilson said hemp can be processed to be 20% more dense than oak, and it grows much faster.
Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin announced the new facility in March.
