The producers of HempWood, a new type of flooring created from hemp, wood and a soybean-based adhesive, plan to have factory-direct flooring available in pallet-size orders in 2020.
Fibonacci LLC cut the ribbon on its 11,230-square-foot factory in Murray, Ky., in August. The company plans to produce a small amount of its finished material in its factory, but said it is looking to partner with downstream manufacturers for larger orders of hardwood flooring (as well as moldings, cabinets, furniture and home goods it plans to make from hemp). The company expects that its order volumes will scale up as its production increases throughout the upcoming year.
The factory-direct HempWood flooring, slated to be the first of its kind, will be available ¾ inches thick in a 5-inch width and feature a soy-based adhesive resin commonly found in the paper industry, the company said. Its construction will be similar to that of strand bamboo.
The flooring is CARB-compliant and can be sanded like any other hardwood floor, with no issues when it comes to recoating, the company said.
The company says it is currently manufacturing 6-by-6-inch-by-72-inch cants, which it can cut down to meet customer requirements.
