Ghana lifted its ban on trading rosewood, and all future rosewood harvesting will be done based on quotas in accordance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, according to Global Wood Markets Info.
Ghana had resorted to a ban after illegal harvesting of the species grew “out of hand” and rosewood was under threat of extinction, GWMI said.
The lifting of the ban will enable companies with rosewood shipments waiting at the ports and in depots across the country to clear their inventory. Companies with rosewood products harvested without approval will pay penalties before they can export their products.
