Tales From the Front: Contractors Elude ‘Sorta Stabby’ Drunk Guy

Andrew Ogden of Brookens Wood Floors in Springfield, Ill., has one of the craziest stories we’ve heard in awhile. As he tells it:

“In late November of 2016, my coworker Dawson Parris and I were working on a basement staircase. The homeowners were going out of town for Thanksgiving and left a key with me, saying their son may be stopping by to feed the cat. On the day before Thanksgiving, we show up in the morning and let ourselves in to find the house a disaster. Beer bottles, boxes of pizza, half-eaten wings everywhere ... We venture further into the house to find a guy passed out upright in a chair at the kitchen island, snoring loudly. Figuring this was the son, I tried to wake him for a few minutes but gave up and decided to get to work. After an hour of making noise, I heard some shouting upstairs, and another guy came down, still very drunk, yelling at me for waking him up on Thanksgiving. I tried to explain to him that it was Wednesday—that Thanksgiving was actually tomorrow—but that just made him irate. He went to the kitchen and grabbed a 10-inch knife, saying he was going to ‘cut a b****.’ He was so drunk he ended up slicing his hand open and started bleeding all over the floor we had just resanded earlier that year. Dawson and I ducked out of the house and told the boss we weren’t going back until the homeowner was back. A few days after Thanksgiving, we went back. The house was spotless, and the homeowner had a few questions about why the house was trashed. I explained what happened, and he quickly became apologetic. Apparently their other son (who was not allowed at the house) caught wind that the house would be empty and threw a big party. The homeowner then went on to tell me that this wasn’t the first incident and that his son can get ‘sorta stabby’ sometimes when he drinks. It was a close call for us, but we are going on 15 months now stab-free!”
