Tales from the Front: Customer Provides Surprise During Staining

Kirk Dozek, owner at Kirk Dozek Wood Floors in St. Clair Shores, Mich., has had some "real crazies" over the years as customers, but the most memorable one was a homeowner who described herself to him as a "neurotic housewife" from the get-go. "You'd turn around and she'd be right there looking at you," he explains. On this job, he had bent over backwards for her by repeatedly trying to get the stain color correct. As he tells it, "Finally I told her, 'You don't need to worry about this; let me do my job. We'll do whatever it takes to make it perfect' ... and we think she leaves. I looked outside and didn't see her, but her car was there. We had wasted almost two and a half gallons of stain trying to get the amount of orange right in her stain, and we went back to the original formula that I knew would turn out how she wanted. So finally I'm staining in the foyer down on my hands and knees and cutting in by the arches. I look up, and she's underneath the dining room table sitting cross-legged, on her phone. I said, 'What the hell are you doing?' She said, 'You said to stay out of the way!' It ended on a good note: We got paid extra from her and did her son's house, too."
