For this Denver project, the customer said she wanted something “different and bold” for her four landing areas and entryway. “I had put a few different designs in front of her with nothing really grabbing her attention,” says Mike Wong, owner of Longmont, Colo.-based Calabrese Hardwood Flooring. “Then she mentioned she wanted something to complement her live-edge walnut table! So I quickly decided to put this design in front of her, and—boom—it was love at first sight!” Wong crafted the pattern from red oak and walnut, then had to make adjustments on site, as the home was older and the areas with the pattern were completely out of square. After final sanding with 120-grit mesh, staining and coating the floor with matte waterborne finish, the upgrade was complete. The result left Wong wanting more: “This was my first time with this pattern, and I can’t wait to do it on a larger layout,” he says. As for the homeowner, “My customer ended up texting me that all expectations were surpassed!” Wong says. “It was a very gratifying project.”
