This workman’s cottage dating back to the 1860s—the early days of Mount Barker, Australia—presented some interesting challenges for longtime pro Troy Stanfield of Plankd Flooring. The red Baltic pine flooring had been repaired with kauri pine in the wrong dimensions, so Stanfield found reclaimed red Baltic pine in the correct width and thickness. Once he repaired the structural supports underneath to eliminate the sagging joists, he could repair the floor’s original repairs. “Then we set about removing the hard life this floor has had, with molten plastic bags, candle wax, glued newspapers, black Japan and very bad cupping,” Stanfield says. “It required some delicate sanding so as not to go through the wear layer.” Once sanded, a stain from an unknown liquid became faintly visible; Stanfield used Berger Seidle’s ExoBlock to seal it. “While it became bright and obvious once the sealer was applied, it faded to clear and was indistinct once the two CeramicStar 2K top coats were applied,” Stanfield explains.—K.M.W.
