Having social media accounts for your business is a great way to market yourself to potential clients, and as careers in “influencing” and “content creation” grow, social media can also be a nice secondary revenue source for your business. We started social media accounts for Lumberjack Hardwood Floors a little over two years ago and have gathered over 151,000 YouTube subscribers and 41,000 TikTok followers in that time. Being a “creator” has been a lot of work, and we’ve probably put thousands of hours into growing our accounts, but it has helped us secure new customers. Plus, ads from YouTube and the TikTok Creator Fund have given us an extra couple thousand dollars a month. Here are our tips for creating a side business on social media.
Identify Your Content Niche
As wood floor pros, your content will most likely align with the type of jobs you are doing. At Lumberjack Hardwood Floors, we’re doing everything from installations and repairs to refinishes and cleanings, so our content ranges from educational videos about the work we do to entertaining content about fun stories from a job. Our short-format videos focus mainly on showing refinishing transformations and on-the-job storytelling, while our long-format videos are mostly geared toward educational content.
Stay True to Your Brand
Creating a content creation side business can often lead to sponsorships from companies in the industry. Our primary form of sponsorship is product reviews. Companies will send us their products and pay us to use them and do a video review. If you get to a point where other companies want to work with you, it’s important that they align with the morals and brand of your business. We get a lot of offers for sponsorships that we don’t accept because they are cheap brands that don’t align with the work we do.
Keep Your Audience in Mind
Your social media content should reflect what your audience wants to see. Often, our customers will give us video ideas in the comments. If we consistently get a question that seems to be a common point of confusion, we’ll make a video on that topic. We figure if our customers have that question, chances are that other people do, too.
Growing a social media business takes a lot of work and long hours, but if it’s something you would enjoy doing and are willing to spend the time, it can be a fun way of producing additional income and boosting your marketing.
