Evolving With Intention: From Showroom to Design Center

Dj26 Retail Showroom To Design Center

For nearly a decade, we operated with a traditional flooring showroom: rows of sample racks, a few display floors and a steady stream of customers coming in to browse. Over time, it became clear that if we wanted to tap into the higher-end home-building market and work more closely with designers and architects, we needed to look the part. The traditional model no longer reflected the level of craftsmanship and design expertise we were bringing to each project.

Why we made the switch

We decided to transition to a design center because the way people make selections has changed. Clients wanted guidance, inspiration and confidence. Many came in overwhelmed by too many choices, leaving with stacks of samples but little clarity. Builders wanted partners who could simplify the process.

Designing the design center

The transformation started with a simple question: What kind of environment would make the selection process easier and more inspiring? Instead of filling the space with every product available, we curated a focused collection of our most popular, high-quality hardwoods. We built large, well-lit sample walls and installed full-size floor vignettes to help clients visualize products in real spaces.

We also integrated cabinetry and countertops so clients could coordinate finishes in one place. This turned our showroom from a transactional environment into a collaborative design studio. Our team received training to act as design guides, helping clients narrow choices through structured consultations instead of leaving them to browse alone.

How it’s improved business

The change has had a major impact. Builder relationships have strengthened because we’ve made their jobs easier. Instead of sending clients to multiple vendors, they can now complete finish selections in one visit. Our close rates are higher, and clients make decisions faster with more confidence. The new space also serves as a hub for hosting builders, designers and architects.

Overall reaction

The response to our new design center has been overwhelmingly positive. Homeowners often say the space feels more like a high-end design studio than a flooring store, and builders appreciate how much time the streamlined process saves. Many have noted that the curated layout and guided approach make the selection experience easier, faster and more enjoyable.

This upgrade has also given our team a rejuvenated sense of pride. They enjoy working in a space that reflects the quality and care we put into every project, and it has elevated the overall energy within our company. Transitioning from a traditional showroom to a design center took planning, but the payoff has been tremendous. It has elevated our business, strengthened relationships and set the tone for future growth.
