A Wood Flooring Cornucopia

Craig DeWitt Headshot

A short week. I was called to this house to look at some structural issues, but when I saw this floor I just had to admire it.

The center of the floor was turkey oak. It took a little to figure out what this flooring was because it had been "roasted." Turkey oak has a dimpled pattern like where feathers were pulled out. Kind of like bird's eye maple, but the dimples are a standard element in turkey oak wood. The other unusual thing about turkey oak is that the heartwood is rather white while the sapwood is darker. The roasting of this wood turned it a rich brown color, and it makes the dimples stand out nicely. Even though the color of these floorboards was unusual, the dimples gave it away.

The floor had a border made of rows of almond, pecan, walnut and a cranberry-stained fruitwood that I suspect was apple. (But it could have been pear.) There was also a row of what I think was pumpkin ash, but I am waiting for Alex to tell me for sure. The finish had an unusual sheen to it; they called it "glazed." The floor made me hungry just looking at it.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody.
