Manufacturer News Armstrong World Industries (Lancaster, Pa.), parent company of Armstrong Hardwood Flooring, earned $1.13 per share during the third quarter of 2009, up from 69 cents per share during the same quarter last year. Sales, however, were down 19 percent; it recorded $753 million in sales, compared with $929.6 million during the same period the previous year. The company recorded $140.1 million in wood flooring sales, down 18 percent from $171 million in the year-ago period; the company cited a declining housing market during this period. However, due to reduced costs for raw materials, freight and manufacturing costs, earnings in this sector increased to $11.2 million from $8.5 million during 2008's third quarter.
Bona US (Aurora, Colo.) held a grand opening for its Rocky Mountain Regional Training Center on Oct. 29 in Aurora. The 1,700-square foot facility features two 280-square-foot training panels and other panels for repair demonstrations. East Teak Fine Hardwoods (Dallas) has merged with Thompson Mahogany Company (Philadelphia); Thompson will now operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of East Teak. Thompson will maintain its headquarters in Washington. The two companies will continue to provide flooring for the residential, commercial and marine industries. Financial details of the merger were not disclosed.
Richard Marshall Fine Flooring Inc. (Hawthorne, Calif.) was awarded a 2009 Southern California Environmental Excellence Development Award by the South Bay Business Environmental Coalition. Richard Marshall was recognized for its achievements in the Waste Reduction and Recycling category by recycling all of its wood by-products, which the company says diverted approximately 51,000 cubic feet of waste from landfills.
