The World Floor Covering Association (WFCA) has endorsed Sen. Dick Durban's (D-Ill.) Main Street Fairness Act, which would require Internet retailers across the country to collect sales tax based on where the consumer is located. According to Accounting Today, consumers are currently required to report unpaid sales tax on their tax forms, though few do so.
According to a WFCA release, "The Main Street Fairness Act addresses a fundamental unfairness that allows out-of-state Internet and mail order companies to avoid collecting and remitting state and local sales taxes while local brick-and-mortar stores are obligated to collect these taxes. The Main Street Fairness Act would create a program that would require Internet and mail order sellers to collect and remit sales taxes to states that elect to participate in the federal program.
The act also has the backing of traditional brick-and-mortar retailer Sears Roebuck & Co. and Internet retail giant Amazon.
