Smith & Fong Expands Use of Soy-Based Adhesive

Smith & Fong (San Francisco) has adopted a soy-based adhesive-dubbed SoyBond-for its PlybooPure flooring and PlybooSport sport flooring.

The adhesive, which is also formaldehyde-free, was developed along with specialty chemical company Ashland Inc. over the better part of two years; Soybond is based on Ashland's Soyad adhesive technology. In addition to different handling procedures and protocols for working with the adhesive, Smith & Fong had to develop new presses and application equipment. The company also points out that the new adhesive passes California Section 01350, a collection of environmental guidelines, and that it is LEED-point eligible.

"Our mission is to move all our manufacturing to the new system," said Dan Smith, the company's president and founder.
