Hong Kong Woman Receives Three-Month Sentence for Importing Illegal Rosewood

A woman in Hong Kong was given a three-month jail sentence after pleading guilty to importing a 29-ton shipment of Honduran rosewood, according to a report by Coconuts Hong Kong.

Cai Huimian, who works part-time at a construction materials business run by her husband, had been listed as the contact person for import documents for the illicit shipment, which had arrived from Guatemala.

The shipment of rosewood, seized by customs in January, had been bound for China, according to the report, and was valued at $369,000 by customs.

The judge cut one month of Huimian’s sentence for admitting to the crime, and cut another month for having no previous criminal record.

Rosewood, which is protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), is the world’s most illegally trafficked wild product, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
