Center of School’s 91-Year-Old Gym Floor Cut Out, Stolen, Then Recovered

Basketballs have undoubtedly been stolen during the countless games played on New Bremen Elementary School’s 91-year-old gym floor, but the hardwood itself had never been stolen––until last week.

Staff of the New Bremen, Ohio, school entered the building the morning of June 29 to discover the center portion of the floor containing the logo was cut out and missing, Sidney Daily News reports. After posting about the theft on social media June 30, the school received an anonymous tip and arranged to have the piece of flooring returned that afternoon. The stolen piece of the hardwood flooring was recovered “undamaged,” according to the report. Charges won’t be filed.

The theft would have taken place between 1 p.m. June 28, after firefighters completed training in the building, and the morning of June 29 when staff arrived, according to the report.

The gym floor was reportedly an original part of the building, constructed in 1929.

The school is transitioning to a new building in September, and it plans to display the cut-out logo at the entrance to the new elementary school.
