China, one of the largest importers of wood in the world, is launching a national forest stewardship standard based on the latest version of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) principles and criteria, according to FSC.
The national standard is set to go into effect Oct. 1 and will remain valid for five years, expiring Oct. 1, 2023. The standard is five years in the making for the country, and is applicable to all forest operations seeking FSC certification within China, not including Hong Kong, Taipei and Macao. It applies to both natural forests and plantations. The standard was written by experts in natural conservation, workers’ rights, forest carbon management, poverty alleviation, international trade and law and legislation, according to FSC.
“The new national standard sets clear targets for forest managers towards sustainable intensification and proactive management of environmental values,” FSC said in a statement.
