The Life of a Contractor’s Wife

Joni Rocco Headshot

While providing the magazine with some recent information for an upcoming article, I mentioned that I had visited various SuperTarget locations to purchase many gallons of ammonia for a project, and I was a bit concerned that employees might flag me as the next Unabomber. How random, right? I am an NWFACP Wood Floor Sales Advisor and I handle operations, marketing, and client communications for our Denver-based contracting business. I am also the proud wife of a hardworking, incredibly skilled wood floor contractor. Most of my days are spent in front of the computer or on the phone, but sometimes my days begin with a phone call from my husband that sounds a little something like this:

No, not that box. The one under the chop saw. No, not that box. The box below the box that’s under the chop saw. I know, I know. That box weighs 45 pounds...

“Hi. I’m at the job site. I know you’re headed for a nice, relaxing hour of yoga followed by a steam at the gym and maybe some pool time with the kids, but instead of that, could you bring me those two gallons of Lenmar Rapid Seal? No, not that box in the overcrowded garage that you’d like to park your car in during hail season. The other box. No, not that box. The one under the chop saw. No, not that box. The box below the box that’s under the chop saw. I know, I know. That box weighs 45 pounds and you’re going to have to lift it up to get to the Rapid Seal. (Ow.) You might as well consider it your workout. Why? Because you’re going to miss yoga and probably the pool, too. Did you forget that the job site is 40 minutes away and by the time you get back, you’ll have to go to that bid you scheduled yesterday in the opposite direction? Oh, and while you’re at that bid, could you stop by Palo Duro and pick up the box of Arboritec finish for tomorrow? Remember, it’s near the prison, so don’t pick up any hitchhikers. (Duh!) Thanks, Honey. I love you. And I forgot my lunch. Did you leave yet? You did? Could you just pack me a sandwich really quick? No, McDonalds is fine. Thank you. I love you.”

No matter how many errands I run and unusual construction-related situations I observe, I will never regret or forget the adventure that is my life as a contractor’s wife. And #mywoodfloorsrock.
