He is taking over for the retiring Ed Williams. Mohawk has also appointed Brad Matthaidess senior vice president, Mohawk Aligned and Builder Programs, a newly created position. Issue Date:2/20/2006Capella Wood Floors (Vicksburg, Miss.) has named Elias Wilf (Owings Mills, Md.) its 2005 Distributor of the Year for the second consecutive year. Elias Wilf distributes Capella flooring in Maryland, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Virginia, Eastern Pennsylvania and portions of West Virginia and New Jersey. In other company news, Capella has been awarded access to more than 400,000 acres of pecan habitat. According to the company, its pecan flooring sales have tripled in the past year.Columbia Flooring (Danville, Va.) has named Randy Johnson director of manufacturing operations-engineered products. He is responsible for the overall operations of Columbia's engineered hardwood flooring plants in Danville and helps oversee the company's Malaysian operations. Johnson was formerly a plant manager for Mannington Wood Floors. In addition, Troy Lovegrove has assumed the title of director of manufacturing operations-solid products. Lovegrove, who has held manufacturing management positions at Columbia since 2000, is now responsible for the overall management of the company's four solid hardwood flooring plants in West Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas and Georgia.Construction of new homes shot up in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.276 million units, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. This rate is up 14.5 percent when compared with December and 4 percent compared with the same month last year. Single-family housing starts rose 12.8 percent to a new record pace of 1.819 million units for the month, 2.8 percent above the same month a year ago.Harvest Timber Co./Pioneered Wood (Lakebay, Wash.) has updated its Web site, www.harvest-timber.com, to showcase its latest hand-scraped product line.The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International will partner to present "The BOMA Green Pavilion and Energy Star Showcase" at the Office Building Show, which will be held June 25-27 in Dallas. State of the Wood Flooring Industry 2002: Wartime Recession

New York City is legendary in the hardwood flooring business for being a tough place to do business.Cut-throat competition and pricing is the norm, and simple logistics of getting to and from job sitescan be frustratingly complicated. But last fall, New Yorkers in the industry had to deal with the most tragic challenge imaginable—Sept. 11, widely acknowledged as the worst day in American history.Hardwood Floors spoke with Michael Badar, vice president of Armstrong’s wood flooring division, which late last year was integrated with Dallas-based Armstrong Floor Products. Before joining Armstrong earlier this year, Badar was with ChoiceParts LLC, an Internet-based auto parts company in Chicago, Ill.Hardwood Floors spoke with Jim Morando, president of Johnson City, Tenn.-based Harris-Tarkett.Early this year, the National Wood Flooring Association in conjunction with the National Association of Floor Covering Distributors and Indian River Consulting Group released the first phase of their joint research project, “The Floor Covering Industry White Paper.” The research was gathered through member surveys and focus groups.
