Capella Wood Floors (Vicksburg, Miss.) has named Elias Wilf (Owings Mills, Md.) its 2005 Distributor of the Year for the second consecutive year. Elias Wilf distributes Capella flooring in Maryland, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Virginia, Eastern Pennsylvania and portions of West Virginia and New Jersey. In other company news, Capella has been awarded access to more than 400,000 acres of pecan habitat. According to the company, its pecan flooring sales have tripled in the past year.

Erickson's Flooring & Supply (Ferndale, Mich.) held an educational conference at its Indianapolis branch January 14 that offered classes in Basics and Fundamentals of Exotics, Advanced Skills and Key Business Techniques. With the support of its vendors, Erickson's has trained more than 65 customers this year, a record for the Indianapolis branch.

Green River American Hardwood (Great Barrington, Mass.) has appointed Randy Stertmeyer president and CEO. Stertmeyer brings 35 years of experience in the construction industry to the company.

Columbia Flooring (Danville, Va.) has named Randy Johnson director of manufacturing operations-engineered products. He is responsible for the overall operations of Columbia's engineered hardwood flooring plants in Danville and helps oversee the company's Malaysian operations. Johnson was formerly a plant manager for Mannington Wood Floors. In addition, Troy Lovegrove has assumed the title of director of manufacturing operations-solid products. Lovegrove, who has held manufacturing management positions at Columbia since 2000, is now responsible for the overall management of the company's four solid hardwood flooring plants in West Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas and Georgia.

Nydree (Forest, Va.), the parent company of Gammapar, PermaGrain and Old Virginia Leather, has named Mary Stephens marketing and promotions manager. Stephens has spent more than 17 years in a variety of marketing roles.

Preverco Inc. (St-Augustin-de-desmaures) has named Woody Hilscher Southeast sales representative for the U.S. Hilscher has more than 25 years' experience in the hardwood flooring industry and has been awarded several degrees from the National Wood Flooring Association.

By the Numbers
The February 2006 National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) stayed at 57 for the third consecutive month. February also marks the second consecutive month in which there has been no change in the component that gauges current single-family home sales, which remains at 62. The component gauging sales expectations for the next six months and the component indicating the traffic of prospective buyers each declined one point to 65 and 40, respectively.

Construction of new homes shot up in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.276 million units, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. This rate is up 14.5 percent when compared with December and 4 percent compared with the same month last year. Single-family housing starts rose 12.8 percent to a new record pace of 1.819 million units for the month, 2.8 percent above the same month a year ago.

NOFMA: The Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association (Memphis) has updated its Web site at www.nofma.org. The site includes several new features, such as an up-to-date listing of all manufacturing members, associate members and NOFMA-certified wood flooring inspectors; articles, tip sheets and NOFMA publications; and information and registration forms for all NOFMA training programs.

Harvest Timber Co./Pioneered Wood (Lakebay, Wash.) has updated its Web site, www.harvest-timber.com, to showcase its latest hand-scraped product line.
