NWFA Holds Beginner Schools
The NWFA provided a head start for wood flooring professionals with its Wood Flooring Basics School, which it offered in conjunction with NOFMA: The Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association and the Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association September 19-22 at the NWFA training facility in St. Louis. Sixty-eight students attended the school led by NOFMA’s Technical Director Mickey Moore and NWFA Technical Advisor Frank Kroupa. NWFA Assistant Director of Technical Training Rusty Swindoll and NOFMA’s Director of Inspection Services and Education Glen Miller assisted the lead instructors. Volunteer instructors included: Galen Fitzel, 3M; Leonard Chapman and Rob Johnson, Basic Coatings; Gene Jarka, Matthew Hudson and Dee Lenston, BonaKemi USA; Wayne Lee, Clarke American Sanders; Reggie Hill, Connor Hardwoods; William Costello, Dura Seal; Mark Lamanno, Franklin International; Cameron Demar, Glitsa American Inc.; Nick Motto, Motto’s Carpet Inc.; David Vinson and John Rider, NOFMA; Richard A. Wheeler, Porta-Nails Inc.; Stan Lawson, Powernail Company Inc.; and Dave Posey, Wood Pro Floors.

The NWFA also held an Introduction to Wood Flooring Installation School September 26-29 in Anaheim, Calif., at the World Floor Covering Association’s headquarters. Steve Marley of Cal Coast Flooring led the instruction of 26 students. Olson Floor Supply Co. Inc. (Jamaica, N.Y.) has hired Michael Foster. Foster formerly worked for Armstrong as architectural specialist, territory manager, national builder sales and residential contract sales.

BonaKemi USA (Aurora, Colo.) has appointed Jared Hall to the newly created position of project manager. Hall has worked for BonaKemi for four years, most recently as product manager of finishes. In his new role, Hall is responsible for implementing product introductions across all product divisions. The company has also promoted Chad Nordhagen to finish product manager. He is responsible for all wood floor finishing products and market channel activity.

Wood Flooring International (Burlington, N.J.) has named Andy Gallo vice president of sales of its new commercial division, Wood Floor Resource Group. By the Numbers
Wood flooring shipments for August 2006 totaled 41,588,000 square feet, according to NOFMA: The Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association. This is an 11 percent decrease compared with the same month last year and brings the year-to-date shipments to 340,817,000 square feet, a 1 percent decrease from the same time period in 2005. The NOFMA data is from hardwood flooring manufacturers in the U.S., corresponding to actual figures from a majority of the known producing units, plus projections representing units for which actual data is occasionally provided or not provided. The flooring shipments reported include solid prefinished and unfinished oak, beech, birch, maple, hickory/pecan, ash, cherry and walnut.

Total housing starts for August 2006 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,665,000 units, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. This is 6.0 percent below the July 2006 figure of 1,772,000 units.

New residential sales of single-family houses in August 2006 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,050,000 units, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. This is 4.1 percent below the revised July rate of 1,009,000 units and 17.4 percent below the August 2005 estimate of 1,271,000 units.
