Let's do a quick review of what we've done so far and what's next:
- We took a concept (a design, an idea, a thought) and put in on paper, then we drew it on our plywood base.
- We chose different woods, cut, shaped and glued them to the base.
- I ended up with a circular (I hope you did, too) medallion.
- We still need to install the medallion and create the center piece.
Notice that the title for this blog series has the words "design" and "creation" in it. That's because a plan is always a good start for another one. It is not like planning out a straight-lay oak install. You snap a line, nail it and you're done. Once you start putting the pieces together, things sometimes need a little change here and there. Initially I thought of a moon flower for the center piece. I also wanted a more complicated detail on the outer bend. Things changed in the process because I decided those elements were not complementing the medallion and the floor around it. Here are pictures of the medallion with a moon flower cut from wood (before sand-shading):
I also sacrificed a padauk piece to double-bevel-cut an inlay which I was not happy with:
And here is another one with curved diamond like inserts:
At that point I decided to install the medallion, complete the rest of the floor and come back to it later. We'll work on that next time.
P.S. To the Lagler team: Now that Germany won the World Cup, you need to go back to work.
