Classic American Hardwoods (Memphis, Tenn.) owner Bill Courtney, who was featured along with his football team in the 2011 Oscar-winning documentary "Undefeated," is releasing a book.
"Against the Grain: A Coach's Wisdom On Character, Faith, Family, and Love" is scheduled to publish in May. Courtney's message is told through stories about his other passion, coaching inner-city high school football players, and the book contains a foreword from former Los Angeles Lakers' coach Phil Jackson.
Courtney's love for wood-he's on the Hardwood Forest Foundation board of directors-also makes an appearance:
"When craftsmen sand and finish a piece of wood against its grain, it becomes warm and smooth, assuming a special quality in furniture and floors that lasts for generations," Courtney writes. "The effort is painstaking, just as it often is adopting the values I discuss…."
