The 2015 Wood Floor of the Year winners were announced during the All-Star Ceremony at the NWFA 2015 Wood Flooring Expo today, and the contest’s Members’ Choice award went to first-time winner Real Antique Wood (Irvington, N.J.).
It was Real Antique Wood’s first time winning a Wood Floor of the Year award.

This black walnut slab live-edge floor was sourced from a tree damaged during Hurricane Irene. The flooring covers approximately 300 square feet, including the staircase, a picture of which went viral online on Facebook and garnered nearly 2 million “likes.”
Best Restoration: Yantarnaya Pryad-Parquet
A number of tree species went into the restoration of this parquet floor, located in the State Hermitage Museum in Russia, including bog oak, maple, pear, sapele and walnut. The company was able to save 75 percent of the original floor, which dates to the 1850s.

Best Manufacturer Factory Finish: Gaylord Hardwood Flooring
This floor installed in the company’s new Ottawa showroom features a starburst medallion bordered by a Greek key pattern. Radiating from the medallion are 16 types of floors that feature hickory, maple, and red and white oak.

Best Commercial: Ourada Designs
Designed for Bostik Inc. to exhibit at its trade show booths, the floor can be folded in half and moved. The floor has more than 70 pieces of wood and one green speckled gecko, Bostik’s mascot.

An owner came to Tom Ourada, owner of Ourada Designs, with a heap of scrap wood and a plea for last year’s Members’ Choice winner to make a floor out of the waste material. The final floor took 168 hours to complete.

Best CNC/Laser Cut: Woodwright Hardwood Floor
A combination of laser and CNC capabilities were employed to create depth and dimension in this medallion. Layers of wenge and maple were laminated together and then a CNC router was used to create the medallion’s checkered background.

Best Reclaimed: Archetypal Imagery Corp.
The oak used for this floor was reclaimed from Revolutionary War-era barns in the United States. The company used the wood scraps left over after the planks on the perimeter of the floor were cut to create the dovetail parquet design in the center. Each dovetail was cut by jigsaw.
