Survey: Very Few Young Adults Choose Construction Careers

Of the 74 percent of adults aged 18–25 who know what career they want to pursue, only 3 percent chose something in the construction trades, according to a survey from the National Association of Home Builders.

Those who chose the construction trades listed “good pay” and the ability to “obtain useful skills” as the reasons behind their decision. “Relying on skills” already possessed and “working outside” were also listed as reasons.

Of the 26 percent of young adults who said they did not know what career they would pursue, more than half said there is little to no chance they would consider a construction trade, regardless of pay. These respondents said they wanted a less physically demanding job and held the belief that construction work is difficult.
