In September, Bona US (Englewood, Colo.) offered students at Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver a friendly challenge: If they could raise $20,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the company would sand and finish its gym floors (work valued between $20,000–$30,000) for free.
The challenge was accepted, and after a presentation of a check from students for $21,000 to the research hospital, Bona will start work on the school’s floors in early 2019.
“The response to this fundraising effort was just tremendous, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to help a wonderful organization like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and also give back to our local school community,” Bona Director of eLearning Todd Schutte said in a statement. “The heart of our business is about inspiring beautiful hardwood floors around the world. When our business can help out a local school and an important cause, it’s a win-win-win for all.”
St. Jude’s has been the charity of choice for Bona for the past three years, and the company has focused on fundraising and participating in local events such as the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer.
The sanding and finishing of the school’s gym floor will be done in partnership with Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Praters Floors.
“Our school gym is in desperate need of a refinish, so this friendly challenge was a great way for us to teach our student body about giving back to a worthwhile cause, while receiving the extra bonus of a new gym floor,” stated Anne Rice, athletic director for Thomas Jefferson High School.
St. Jude Representative Paty Sands said in a statement that the charity organization relies on support from fundraising efforts such as this.
“This donation will go a long way to help children battling childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases,” Sands stated.
