Custom Home Building Down From Last Year’s High

There were 49,000 custom home building starts in the second quarter of 2026, a 9% decrease from the same quarter last year—a three-year high for quarterly volume—according to a National Association of Home Builders analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data from the Quarterly Starts and Completions by Purpose and Design survey. 

Over the last four quarters, custom single-family starts totaled 183,000 homes, effectively unchanged from 184,000 in the preceding four quarters. Overall single-family construction was down almost 7% through the first seven months of 2026.
