The largest increase came from single-family housing starts, which jumped 25.1 percent from December 2018. Multifamily housing starts, including apartment buildings and condos, grew 2.4 percent.
January housing starts fell 5.7 percent in the Midwest but increased 58.5 percent in the Northeast, 29.3 percent in the West and 13.8 percent in the South.
Housing permits grew 1.4 percent to 1.35 million, with single-family permits dropping 2.1 percent and multifamily permits increasing 7.2 percent.
