The Boston Celtics’ basketball court went back to school this summer.
The legendary floor known for its parquet pattern was relocated to Pembroke High School in Pembroke, Mass., in order to be refinished before the 2019-2020 season, the Patriot Ledger reports. Its 276 pieces were reinstalled in the school’s gymnasium while the work is performed.
Bona U.S. (Englewood, Colo.) supplied the paint and finish for the maintenance, which is being performed by Kenvo Floors, according to the report.
“The floor is broken down and put back in place upwards of 75 to 80 times each year,” Bona National Sports Manager Bill Price told the Ledger, “but despite that it’s really in remarkable shape.”
The historic floor will be broken down and put back together at TD Garden once the refinishing concludes; but for now, the high school is enjoying time with hardwood that still features sections walked on by the likes of legends such as Bob Cousy, Bill Russell and Larry Bird.
“It’s a little surreal to walk out of my office and see the Garden parquet floor every day,” Pembroke High School Athletic Director Justin Domingos told the Ledger. “The kids here using the workout room can look out the window and see a piece of history every day.”
