A middle school in Bucksport, Maine, caught backlash on social media after announcing that improper footwear on its brand-new gym flooring could affect a student’s grades, News Center Maine reports.
Among the school’s list of floor rules, which it shared in a Facebook post, is the requirement that students have “clean sneakers” before setting foot on the gym floor, which opened Dec. 9.
“Not having sneakers for class will affect each student’s grade,” the school stated. “Constant disregard for the proper footwear will lead to a lunch or recess detention.”
The school also stated that students should make sure their sneakers do not have black soles that “leave black marks” on gym floors.
Responding to the backlash, the superintendent told News Center Maine all the rules are listed in the student handbook and aren’t new.
“The intent of having students wear clean, athletic footwear is both for student safety and for maintenance of the facility,” he stated.
