A woman nearly lost her life after using a homemade fractal wood-burning machine––also known as a Lichtenberg machine––for a DIY project at her New Mexico home, the Albuquerque Journal reports.
The woman and her husband were creating designs with the homemade fractal wood-burning device May 18 when the cables the woman was holding electrocuted her and sent her into shock.
The husband was able to perform CPR on her until the ambulance arrived. She has recovered, but suffered burns on her hands and received skin grafts, according to the report.
The couple told the Journal they’ve since disposed of the Lichtenberg machine and intend to complete their wood-burning project using a small propane torch.
