A pile of oil wood finish-soaked rags was determined to be the cause of a house fire in Agawam, Mass., that killed one person and injured another, Western Mass News reported.
The fire started March 9, killing a teenager. There were no working smoke detectors in the home, according to investigators. The rags were piled in the breezeway of the two-story home.
“Wood finishing products that were left on some rags … When those are left in an enclosed space, or balled up, they can generate heat and spontaneously combust. We believed that’s what happened in this fire,” Agawam Fire Chief Alan Sirois told Western Mass News.
