A high school gym floor undergoing a refinish during school hours last week prompted an emergency dismissal after students and teachers complained of fumes, WAMC reported.
The gym at Pittsfield High School in Pittsfield, Mass., was reportedly meant to be refinished when school was not in session, but the refinishing was pushed back due in part to sports teams practicing in the fall. Teachers reported smelling the fumes throughout the school building Nov. 17, a day prior to hundreds of students being evacuated at 11 a.m. Nov. 18 due to the smell.
It was not clear from the report exactly what type of finish was used on the gym floor.
The superintendent apologized for the situation, noting it was his first time refinishing the gym floors since becoming superintendent.
