Mac DavisMac DavisMac Davis, the owner of high-end retail and installation business Mac Davis Flooring with locations on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts, as well as Osterville, Mass., and Newport, R.I., has opened Coastal Surfaces, a business dedicated to importing and distributing high-quality engineered wood flooring from Europe.

“Coastal Surfaces is a distribution company with all the knowledge from my years of doing installation and retail, because I’ve worked at it for a while,” Davis says, adding that because of what he’s experienced since starting Mac Davis Flooring in 2006, “We are heavily focused on customer service.”

Chris BreslinChris BreslinDavis serves as the president of Coastal Surfaces, and vice president of sales is Chris Breslin, a longtime industry veteran who most recently was director of business development at Galleher for 11 years.

Coastal Surfaces currently stocks the Italia Collection, which has seven colors in ¾-inch engineered prefinished flooring made in Italy. The collection has lengths no shorter than 8.3 feet. “There are very clean coastal colors in that collection, and we aren’t doing any fuming because I want colors that will be consistent,” Davis says. “I’m bringing in colors that I know sell very well."

To coordinate with Italia is the Famiglia Collection, a ⅜-inch-thick engineered floor with a 0.6 wear layer of European oak with a Baltic birch core and a cork backing. The Familia Collection matches the ¾-inch engineered floors but offers options for clients who want to put a matching floor in the basement, for example, Davis says. The collection offers the same water-resistance as LVP, Davis says.

Additionally, the company offers the Coastal Collection, which has some flooring that is 9.5 inches wide by ¾-inch thick with a 6-mil wear layer and some products that are ⅝-inch thick with a 4-mi wear layer.

“We aren’t going to offer this to just anyone,” Davis explains. “We’re really offering it to people who are like myself—where they really know good product and want really good service. We are very on top of communication and marketing tools, too.”

Companies can offer the branded flooring or have the option of private-labeling the collections. “There are no prices on the website—we are trying to protect anybody that invests in us,” Davis explains. The company will also offer exclusivity.

“What Mac and I want to build is a unique boutique-type distribution business where we are offering better products from Europe and some price-point items that coordinate with high-end european oak products—and be exclusive,” Breslin says.

Coastal Surfaces is based in Mashpee, Mass., where a 10,000-square-foot warehouse is under construction and due to open in July. Breslin is based out of Portland, Ore., and Davis plans to also have representation in the Midwest.
