Wood floor pro Brandon Krause of Moorhead, Minn.-based Red River Floor Company refinished these stairs at a home in a small North Dakota town. "These beautifully figured birch stairs sat covered for 100 years in countless layers of shellac," Krause says. He removed the balusters for ease of sanding, then sanded using Bona green ceramic abrasives and 3M Regalite on a Festool ETS random orbital sander and an American B2 edger. Krause then coated the stairs with Basic Coatings' Lock 'N Seal, followed by two coats of StreetShoe NXT. The total time invested to refinish 12 stairs and two landings was 22 hours. "The homeowner and I were both surprised by how breathtaking they were once the original finish was removed," Krause says.
