This issue’s Trick of the Trade comes from Cuyler Rigney of Focal Point Floors in Delaware, Ohio:
When Cuyler Rigney started his business last year, he made self-preservation one of his goals. He bought an edger dolly and also built a ramp for his van. And as he repeatedly carried and lifted his Galaxy big machine motor, he says he kept thinking, “There’s gotta be a better way,” and he started scouring the internet for solutions. What he arrived at was a three-tiered cart from Harbor Freight. He drilled a couple of holes in the top shelf for eye-bolts and got a ratchet strap for the motor. The cart also holds his dust bag, all his tools for the big machine, his belts, extra drive belts and anything else he might need while sanding. In his van, he drilled a carriage bolt through one side of his bulkhead that separates the seats from the cargo area and drilled a hole in the storage cart on the bottom rack. A wing nut secures the cart tightly to the bolt while he’s driving. When he gets to a job, he puts his Galaxy inside close to the door and pulls his cart up as close as possible—that way he never has to bend to the floor to pick up the motor and has as few steps as possible carrying it. As it relates to his goal of self-preservation, it was “a stroke of genius,” he says.
