This issue’s Trick of the Trade is from Daniel Caffo of Daniel Caffo Hardwood Flooring Inc. in Woodlyn, Pa.:
I came up with this jig for scribing to the stone walls of a recent project we did in Wayne, Pa. I used an oak cut-off for the base, and the bottom edges were rounded over to avoid catching on small obstructions. I also opened the groove slightly so it would glide easily along the board being scribed. Two guides are glued to the top at 90 degrees for the slide, and the slide is fitted with a washer that rolls along the wall at ¾ inch high, just where you need it, and a rubber band that keeps it tensioned to the wall. I also oiled and rubbed it down with steel wool so it works smoothly. I hadn’t fashioned a pencil holder yet when we did this job, so we drilled a hole for the pencil to draw through. It saved the day on this job that had 80 feet of stone walls to scribe to.
