25 Years of NWFA History

Kim Wahlgren Headshot

No one who was involved at the start would imagine what the National Wood Flooring Association would become. Twenty-five years later, here's a glimpse of the highlights of its storied history.

1985

May 1985: In Memphis, Tenn., at a Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association meeting, an after-hours conversation among several wood flooring industry veterans leads to a discussion about an industry-wide national association.

July 1985: The eleven who would be recognized as founders of the National Wood Flooring Association—Virgil Hendricks, Jack Wilcox, Jack Coates, Gary Reynolds, Albert Duke, Roland Holder, Harold Reid, Johnny Austin, Jim Duke, Al Pollard and Steve Brown—meet in Dallas to develop the idea. They appoint themselves as a steering committee.

September 1985: The group meets again in St. Louis and eight of them—Hendricks, Wilcox, Coates, Reynolds, Albert Duke, Holder, Reid and Austin—put up seed money to get the organization off the ground. They also agree to begin drafting bylaws, as well as a statement of goals and purposes.

"The people who put this thing together had great chemistry, they worked together beautifully, they had a passion for the industry and they had a vision; and I think that vision came through and exceeded our expectations ... It was a lot of fun, and I had more fun than anybody ... and to think that things started right here in my office." — Virgil Hendricks
