Vintage Moments: 3M's Galen Fitzel At Leisure

photo of Galen Fitzel with 3M team3M sanding services specialist Galen Fitzel retired last summer, but not before this gem of a photo surfaced of him (that's him at the far right styling a genuine Johnny Carson-brand polyester leisure suit). The photo is from his early days with the company, when his 3M team won Company of the Year in the 1973 Twin Cities Junior Achievement award. The entertainment that evening was Chubby Checker, the singer who popularized the Twist, Fitzel recalls.

A Formidable Challenge: Introducing Waterborne Coatings
The early 1980’s were an interesting time in the wood floor finish business. Oil-modified urethane (OMU) was king. While there were a few other types of finishes being used, almost every contractor used OMU. However, that was going to change very quickly.
Stephen Gunneson of Branford, Conn.-based Gunneson Flooring Company shared these two artifacts from the early days of water-based coatings: a vintage gallon of Basic Coatings Street Shoe water-based finish found at a customer’s home, and a casette tape of a seminar on “Water Based Floors” from 1995.

In Memoriam: Lifelong Industry Veteran Warner Tweed Dies at 90
Lifelong wood floor industry veteran Warner Tweed, who had an expansive career starting as a NOFMA mill inspector in 1960, died on Feb. 6 at the age of 90.
'Warner had two passions besides his family: The wood flooring industry and the outdoors,' says longtime friend and fellow wood floor pro John Mayers. 'That man loved to hunt and fish.'
