What was the first NWFA convention like? Those of us who weren't there can get an idea of the show, held mere months after the National Wood Flooring Association's founding, from this excerpt from the NWFA's The Log newsletter in the October/November 1989 issue of Hardwood Floors:
"That first convention, like others since, was a working, learning session with seminars conducted by experts within the industry. There was also a tabletop display area for manufacturers to show their wares, a practice continued until the 1989 convention, when full-fledged trade show-type booths were introduced. While some 'fun' time is provided within the schedule, the conventions, which open with a reception on Wednesday evening and run through noon Saturday, feature the seminars and display area, speakers from outside the industry on current topics of pertinent interest, a President's Banquet on Friday evening, and sight-seeing [sic] and shopping tours for spouses. At that 1986 convention, members approved the bylaws and goals and purposes statement, and elected a 15-member board of directors with staggered terms, so that five new directors would be elected each year, thus providing continuity to the board."
