Doing professional and college basketball courts today isn’t for the faint of heart. Long gone are the days when basic lettering and a simple logo were all that was demanded. Just ask Jared Deveraux, general manager at Professional Floor Systems in Shelley, Idaho: “As many people in our industry will tell you, they hand you a design with certain paint colors and stains, and just because you can print it out on a computer doesn’t mean it automatically goes down on a floor perfectly—and this was one of those scenarios.”

This particular scenario was a request from the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves to create a design they envisioned to tell the story of the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” It had a three-dimensional effect that alludes to water, and although Deveraux had no idea how they would pull it off, “We have a bevy of courts we’ve done that have pushed the envelope design-wise, and so this one we welcomed, like we always do,” he says, referring to courts such as the University of Oregon’s “Deep in the Woods” design and San Jose State’s glow-in-the-dark court.
