When you're coating a floor, you want the air in the room to be as still as possible, but after a couple hours, when the finish has skinned over, you need air movement to help cure the finish. Curt Sandberg and his crews used to go get coffee, then wait around until the finish skinned over enough to turn fans on. Now instead of wasting their time they use inexpensive timers like the ones used to turn on lamps when you're on vacation—no more waiting around for finish to dry.

The early 1980’s were an interesting time in the wood floor finish business. Oil-modified urethane (OMU) was king. While there were a few other types of finishes being used, almost every contractor used OMU. However, that was going to change very quickly.
