Wood Floor Trend Spotting: Random Widths in Smallest State's Smallest Town

For the past two years, Jonathan Gramajo of GQ Hardwood Floors in Central Falls, R.I., has seen a demand for random-width white oak floors. He says it began when one of the area's largest builders started incorporating the style, typically in widths ranging from 4 to 10 inches. "I do 90% of the floors for this builder," says Gramajo, "and since I post everything on social media, my other clients started pointing at the pictures and asking for the same wood and patterns." Word travels fast in Central Falls, the smallest town in the smallest state, and the trend soon overtook the 3¾-inch red oak floors that had been popular. "I love and enjoy random plank installations," Gramajo says.
