This issue's trick is from wood flooring pro Steven Bumpus at Simsbury, Conn.-based Farmington Valley Flooring LLC:
This is a little trick I learned that can save your back, your clients' walls and their door trims. When taking out carpet, there are a few things to consider: a safe path out of the house, how heavy the carpet is and how to handle it without bumping into everything. Years ago I was working with a contractor who came up with an ingenious idea to carry carpet out to the dumpster. No tape is needed, and it has a handle, so it's easy to maneuver through the house. To do it, cut a strip halfway down the length of the roll, then make two cuts in the middle of the roll and feed it through. It's time and energy saved!
