A study conducted by the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) shows that new homes in 2015 will be smaller, greener and more casual. The change in preference from homebuyers has emerged during the recent housing downturn, which has left an "indelible mark" on prospective homebuyers, the association says.
NAHB: Homes to Shrink, Get More Green, by 2015
Builders surveyed expect square footage to decrease 10 percent to about 2,152 feet; some builders think the living room will "vanish entirely." The only area of the home builders expect to grow is the family room. While the foyer is also expected to shrink, opinions are "fairly evenly divided on the fate" of the kitchen, master bedroom and bath, and mudroom.
Builders also said homes will include more green features and technology, including low-E windows; engineered wood beams, joists or trusses; water-efficient features such as dual-flush toilets or low-flow faucets; and an Energy Star rating for the whole house.
