Historic BB Court Uncovered in Canada

Basketball has changed immensely since Dr. James Naismith first taught it to his physical education students at Massachusetts' YMCA Training School in 1891, but hardwood flooring has always been the preferred surface for play. Recently, the court that hosted the first Canadian basketball game was uncovered in St. Stephen, N.B., according to CBCNews. In 1892 a student of Naismith's organized the basketball game in the Canadian border town's YMCA. Last May a fire badly damaged the building, and during cleanup and restoration some carpet on the second floor was torn back to reveal "very narrow hardwood" that would have been the surface of the basketball court, CBC reported. According to The Globe and Mail, town organizers are now deliberating how to best use the 119-year-old piece of hardwood history.
