The U.S. International Trade Commission's investigation into dumping and government subsidies on the part of engineered flooring manufacturers in China is expected to have contributed to an overall 6% decline in that country's wood flooring industry in 2011, according to a new 74-page report by Research in China.
Other contributors included tightened real estate regulation policy and rising wood prices in China. Looking ahead, Research in China anticipates that China will continue to increase the control of the real estate industry in 2012, but that the end of the ITC's investigation should benefit its wood flooring industry.
The report spans 2010-2012. In 2010, the researchers determined that the Chinese wood flooring industry experienced increased output and sales volume due to the country's rebounding real estate industry; output grew 26.7 percent year-on-year to about 5.2 billion square feet, while sales volume increased 9.4 percent year-on-year to 4.3 billion square feet.
The report details the surge of engineered wood flooring in China and the "continuous" decline of solid wood flooring. It also includes breakdowns of prominent Chinese wood flooring brands, including Power Dekor, for which Shaw Industries Inc. (Dalton, Ga.) is a supplier. Power Dekor, "one of the earliest wood flooring brands in China," offers products in all segments except cork. The company's annual capacity is pegged at 624.3 million square feet, predominantly in laminate products.
China Flooring has seen increased awareness of its Nature brand, which has led to increased sales volume. In 2010, the company's solid wood flooring sales volume increased 24.7 percent to about 49.5 million square feet from the previous year.
The Elegant Living brand delivered "outstanding performance" in 2011, successfully expanding in markets in the Middle East and Russia.
